From SAT Tests to Science Fair Projects or High School Chemistry Prep, Gravitas Publications Helps Students Prepare

High school students prepping for SAT tests, competing in science fairs, or studying high school chemistry can thank Gravitas Publications Inc. for providing new tools in the form of new product bundles that make it easier to understand science.

The SAT Language Kit Bundle from Gravitas uses Biology, Physics and Chemistry Level I “Connects to Language Series” Real Science books to help students learn Latin and Greek word roots for scientific terms. Rebecca Keller, PhD, explains, “People who are efficient know the word root and can figure out the rest of the word even if they have never seen it before.” The three vocabulary builder workbooks sell for $52.95.

The Science Fair Project Bundle includes six separate books to help launch focused experiments and sells for $117.95. The texts, which include teacher’s manuals and laboratory workbooks, are written by Dr. Keller, who served seven year as science fair judge chairman for the State of New Mexico.

A third bundle, High School Chemistry, is labeled a prep course for High School Chemistry and includes five books for $147.75. The most notable feature of the Gravitas prep course is the addition of a critical thinking component to help the student create a critical thinking lens so he/she can begin evaluating data for himself/herself.
Gravitas Publications Inc. produces educational materials that provide a framework for understanding science with Real Science-4-Kids (RS4K), a textbook series for elementary and mid-school students, and Kogs-4-Kids, a cross-curricular module that connects science to other subjects. Science Blog Encourages Inquiry

NEWS RELEASE

DATE: June 3, 2008

Gravitas Publications Emphasizes ‘What if?’

Albuquerque, NM – Every Monday a blog post about science experiments greets visitors to Gravitas Publications and further encourages scientific inquiry. “There is nothing more important for children studying science than to learn to ask ‘What if?’” commented Rebecca Keller, PhD and CEO of Gravitas Publications Inc. Keller, a scientist, author and home school parent, promotes science as a foundation for learning. Her Real Science-4-Kids textbooks and lab manuals enjoy increasingly successful sales during this, the publisher’s fifth year.

Chemistry experiments received blog attention during the first eight-week effort; a series of posts on Biology experiments begins the last week of May and will be followed by experiments for Physics. “At every home school convention, we hear from parents about the value of experiments for their children. Our experiments use common ingredients found in nearly any kitchen; we encourage children to question different combinations and report their findings.”

Recent conventions indicate a growing interest in scientific information from Gravitas. Not only are sales up significantly year-to-date, standing-room-only crowds have greeted Dr. Keller’s presentation at various conventions, such as The MassHOPE Home School Convention in Worcester, MA. Before the season ends, Gravitas Publications will exhibit at 22 home school conventions.

“I believe these sales are indicative of a growing interest in education; I see it across the country,” commented Dr. Keller. “Our private school and charter school orders have also increased.”

Dr. Keller describes her company’s three-pronged response to increased demand for product and information:

  1. In addition to our weekly science blog postings, our newest product, Kogs-4-Kids™, connects science to other subjects. This is one of the first interdisciplinary efforts in science curriculum in the country. Kogs publishes June 1 and has already enjoyed significant pre-publication success.
  2. The team writing Real Science-4-Kids texts has responded to increased demand for Pre-level Physics and Level I Earth and Space texts with 2009 publication dates. Level 2 Biology will publish in 2010 and Level 2 Physics is on the drawing board for 2011.
  3. Due to popular demand, a member service offering special product discounts and additional features such as online testing and supplemental teacher aids is being considered for introduction in the latter part of 2008; the Gravitas community group on Yahoo now exceeds 850.

Dr. Keller Bio

Dr. Rebecca KellerIn 2001 Dr. Rebecca W. Keller began to develop a formalized training program to equip non-science teachers (usually other moms) to feel comfortable with the material. Today, Real Science-4-Kids, with its easy-to-use teacher-friendly manuals and engaging, kid-friendly text, is in 50 states as well as Australia, Canada, Japan and Korea. Dr. Keller’s team continues to develop and test products. She is introducing Kogs-4-KidsTM, an interdisciplinary curricula program, in Spring 2008. Dr. Keller didn’t set out to be an author. A former research assistant professor at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, Dr. Keller worked in the molecular biology field. Her background in biophysics, molecular biology and neuroscience, coupled with her love of the dramatic led her to prepare interesting “labs” for her children and neighbors. “Science is fun,” she says. A home-school mom, she developed Real Science-4-Kids after searching for a science curriculum that taught solid science concepts in a manner understandable for youngsters.

Cross Curricular Science Program Introduced at Midwest Homeschool Convention

NEWS RELEASE
For Immediate Release
DATE: March 10, 2008

Curriculum supplement makes science as foundation for learning other subjects

Albuquerque, NM -- Dr. Rebecca W. Keller, author, publisher, and CEO of Gravitas Publications, Inc. discusses her cross curricular approach to education at the Midwest Homeschool Convention March 27-29 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

"Children learn the essential concepts of science with Real Science-4-Kids, and now Kogs-4-Kids™ enhances learning with depth of subject, staged repetition and connections to language, history, philosophy, technology and the arts," said Dr. Keller.

Dr. Keller formed Gravitas Publication in 2001 to publish a science series for grades K through nine. Since that time the curriculum has been used in all 50 states as well as a number of foreign countries.

During this weekend's convention, Dr. Keller discusses "Teaching Science in Context," a system that explores how science connects with other subjects. In keeping with her theme, Gravitas recently introduced Kogs-4-Kids, a supplement to the RS4K series; six workbooks connect Level I Chemistry to language, history, philosophy, technology, the arts and critical thinking.

MHC attendees can also hear Dr. Keller's presentation "Help! How to Prepare Your Student for High School or College Science." In this presentation Dr. Keller discusses the foundational materials students need as building blocks to grasp a broad scientific knowledge and how these materials offer more effectiveness than a traditional approach to elementary science education.

A third presentation, "Reclaiming Science for God," presents a framework for thinking outside the philosophy of Naturalism and looking at how science points toward and not away from a divine Creator.

See an up-to-date listing of conference events, including Dr. Keller's presentation topics and times, at http://www.gravitaspublications.com/events/.

Curriculum Supplement Enhances Learning for Kids

Gravitas Publications Introduces Kogs-4-Kids Real Science-4-Kids Series

Albuquerque, NM -- Rebecca Keller, PhD, CEO of Gravitas Publications, Inc. confirmed the release of Kogs-4-Kids, a workbook supplement to Real Science-4-Kids series (RS4K).

The innovative program module, available now for Chemistry Level I, grades 4 through 6, contains the current RS4K Chemistry Level I textbook, the student workbook and teacher's manual, plus six Kogs workbooks that connect Level I Chemistry to 1) language, 2) history, 3) philosophy, 4) technology, 5) the arts, and 6) critical thinking.

"Our interdisciplinary curriculum promotes deeper understanding of scientific information so that children learn essential concepts well, rather than simply memorizing a random collection of facts," commented Dr. Keller. "Learning occurs in stages that requires both repetition and depth. RS4K along with Kogs-4-Kids promotes a sequence of necessary learning steps that will help students achieve scientific literacy."

Testimonials

I just want to tell you how much my kids (4 and 7) are enjoying the Chemistry book.  My older child LOVES chemistry, and I have been looking for resources that are a bit more child-friendly ...  He has read the first 5 chapters [PreLevel Chemistry] in less than 2 weeks ... He spent this weekend with his red cabbage indicator testing everything I agreed was non-toxic enough to handle.  : )
