Textbooks
You will need a student textbook, a teacher’s manual, a laboratory workbook, and materials for experiments for each subject you teach. There is an additional language workbook for the Level I chemistry, biology and physics, and there are also KOG workbooks available for Level I Chemistry.
Experiments
Most of the materials required for experiments are common household items or items that can be purchased at your grocery store. Some items (like a butterfly kit, etc.) need to be ordered (and suppliers are noted).

I am sorry I am a bit confused, and could not find my answer in the FAQ. Does Chemistry Level 1 take a full year of school to complete? or do I need all three books in the Level to complete a year?
It depends on the pace of your student. Some will want to go through the curriculum slowly and if they do the Kogs, it can easily take a year. Others want to go through the books more quickly and so they may want to do more than one text.
I have a gifted 1st grader who I pulled out of public school 5 weeks ago. Simply put, he was learning more from his dad and I at home. He was suffering bored stiff for 6 hours in public school. Is there an order to the Pre level 1? Chemistry, then biology then physics? Or, do I teach a certain number of chapters per text then switch? I know he will love the whole thing. He has pretended to be a scientist since he was 3, but, I am just not quite sure where to begin and how to proceed. I have no idea how fast he will proceed, but, I assume he will be finished by 4th grade and be ready to go to level 1. We are very interested in this program. Our son has been very disappointed with grade school science and has accused the teachers of “not teaching science” since kindergarten.
Thank You for any assistance,
Anthea
My 9 year old has never done any Physics or Chemistry and I am considering getting her to do Pre Level 1 Chemistry with her 7 year old sibling twice a week and also getting her to do Pre Level Physics twice a week on her own (with me of course) just to catch her up. Do you think this would be too big a workload for a bright child? Also would you recommend each student has their own textbook and laboratory textbooks if working together or can they share both or either? Thanking you
I think a 9 year old can do both the Pre-Level I Chemistry and Pre-Level I Physics. They don’t need their own textbooks but it’s better if they have their own laboratory workbooks. These can be purchased as print books or as digital files for you to print yourself.
This is the place where I thought I would find the typical section outlining the number of days per week for which the curriculum is intended, and some samples of how it would work for alternate schedules. For example, perhaps this is designed for a 5-day per week study, and one chapter should be covered per week. Then a break-down for people doing a 4 or 2-day schedule, etc. Recommendations per grade level would be nice too, since this covers several grades. I know we can customize, but I always like to know what type of schedule the person who created the curriculum had in mind when they designed it, and why.
Okay. Now that I’m done with the dissertation my actual question would be: How would you recommend I break down pre-level 1 chemistry for a 1 or 2-day per week science study, for a 1st grader? This answer will help me to decide how much I need to get through a year. Thank you!
Hi Tonie,
I’ve been working on a lesson plan to answer this very question! Go to this link http://www.gravitaspublications.com/lesson-plans and download the free lesson plan and let me know what you think.
If my 1st grader and I do Pre-Level 1 books, can I stretch them out to do a full year? To do this, would I do lessons once or twice a week?
Hi Lori,
Yes, go to this link http://www.gravitaspublications.com/lesson-plans and download the free lesson plan for a year. I recommend 11 weeks per semester for Pre-Level.
I’m interested in purchasing the pre level chemistry for my 2 students. I’m also interested in the PDF quizes and study folder but I wasn’t able to find whether or not the PDF files are mac compatible. Thanks!
Hi Stephanie,
Yes, all the digital files work on both Mac and PC.

Hi Anthea,
If you have a first grader, second grader or third grader, begin with Pre-Level I Chemistry. You will need the student text, teacher’s manual and student workbook. Pre-Level I Chemistry has 10 chapters and 10 experiments that will cover 20 weeks of instruction. Each chapter takes two weeks. One week is dedicated to the student text and the following week is dedicated to the laboratory experiment. You do not have to do science every day. After completing Pre-Level I Chemistry, continue the series with Pre-Level I Biology, Pre-Level I Physics, and Pre-Level I Astronomy following the same approach used for Pre-Level I Chemistry.
