The main focus of the class was to memorize the Periodic Table. Every day our teacher would hand us a half sheet of paper with small empty boxes arranged like the Periodic Table. We’d sit for 5 or 10 minutes and fill in as many elements as we could. At some point I had the whole Periodic Table memorized and I got an “A” in the class. I felt accomplished and ready for college.

When I got to college my professor didn’t ask me to fill in a blank Periodic Table. He didn’t seem to care that I had all the elements memorized and instead started talking about s,p, and d orbitals. I had never heard these terms before and I was completely lost. What I found out later was that the stuff I learned in high school was a complete waste of my time and did very little to prepare me for real science. Real scientists don’t memorize the Periodic Table!

I’m Dr. Rebecca Keller and I did learn the chemistry I needed to know to get a PhD and do some real science in a lab for over 20 years. Today I write science books for kids and am the author of Real Science-4-Kids, a science program that teaches kids what they need to know without wasting their time. My program takes college-level science and boils it down to the essential concepts kids need to know before they go to college. Each of my books introduces kids to the core concepts of science in real scientific disciplines like chemistry, biology, physics, astronomy, (and soon geology). The books are short and easy to use, with colorful graphics and kid-friendly lettering. Because the content is real science, the kind of science scientists actually need to know, kids are immediately engaged and eager to learn. I don’t ask kids to memorize the Periodic Table, but I do show them how the elements are arranged on the Periodic Table and I tell them why. There’s no fluff in my books, they don’t waste time, and kids love them.

As a homeschool mom, business owner, and author the dishes pile up and the laundry takes over my living room. I love books and I have shelves full of books about time-management, calendars, Day Timers, and scheduling notebooks. However, my calendars and scheduling notebooks usually sit idle on my desk. They are either too big or too small, have too many pages or too few. Or there are just too many instructions for how to manage time that it takes too much time to use them.

So I decided to create a system that worked for me.

After reading several time management books, I distilled what I learned and put together these 3×5 notes to help me organize my ToDo lists, write down mileage for my car, and work on various problem solving/communication/relationship skills.

I like the 3×5 size because it fits in both large and small notebooks. I also like being able to print more when I need them and not worrying about finding them in stock at the store!

Just download the pdf files, print them out, and cut them to fit your notebook or wallet. They work great for me and I hope they work for you too!

Have a wonderful Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Warm regards,

We could put answers for the Language Kog and parts of the Critical Thinking Kog, but again, the exercise of discovering the answers is more important than the answers themselves. The Kogs are really about working through a process of creating cognitive connections. Finding the right answer is less important.

In 1984, Dr. Calbreath and his family moved to Spokane, Washington, where he taught on the faculty of the Chemistry Department at Whitworth College (now Whitworth University). His course assignments ranged from classes for non-majors up to senior-level biochemistry. During that time he was the pre-medicine advisor for the college. His research interests were in the relationship between biochemistry and behavior and issues in mental illness, particularly depression. Other writing and teaching focused on questions in medical ethics. Dr. Calbreath retired as an emeritus associate professor of chemistry in 2006. He now enjoys writing science materials, traveling with his wife, playing traditional Southern music on his two guitars, and spending time with his two daughters and four grandchildren.
